American Dad renewed as 'Hill' goes

American Dad family

Big news for fans of American Dad today as Fox have announced that the series has been renewed for a fifth production cycle. The final episodes of the third cycle are currently airing on Fox as the fourth season and production of the fourth cycle is coming to a close. This means that American Dad should be on our screens well into 2010.

Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman, American Dad‘s co-creators/executive producers (Seth MacFarlane being the other), have just signed two-year, seven-figure overall deals with producer 20th Century Fox Television with an option of a third year extension. The contracts will ensure that the pair remain at the helm of the show for the foreseeable future as well as developing new projects for the studio. For the time being Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman will keep their attention focused on American Dad to maintain momentum on what Twentieth Century Fox Television chairman Dana Walden has called, “a critical year for the show.”

Work has already working on the fifth season, whilst maintaining a close eye on the presidential race. “If (Barack) Obama wins, that would provide an interesting wrinkle to the show as Stan is such a die-hard Republican,” Weitzman said. Added Barker, “If (John) McCain wins, it would be great for the show and horrible for our grandchildren.”

At the same time as announcing the renewal of American Dad, Fox have said that the 13th run of King of the Hill will be its last. This news comes as the network prepares to launch its first two new animated shows in years, Sit Down, Shut Up and The Cleveland Show (the Family Guy spin-off about Cleveland Brown).

This is great news. It’ll be interesting to see where the show goes after Bush is out of office which ever way the election goes.
