"McCain/Palin" Nazi gag controversy

McCain/Palin campaign pin badge

Sunday night’s episode of Family Guy has caused a bit of controversy after it made a highly topical joke about the current US presidential race. In the episode, Road to Germany, Stewie is seen wearing a Nazi uniform with a “McCain/Palin” campaign pin badge, leading some to question whether the show had gone too far.

“The McCain campaign did not have an immediate comment,” reports Fox News. “A rep for the show defended the episode, telling Foxnews.com: ‘From its inception, Family Guy has used provocative concepts and biting satire as the foundation of its humor. The show is an “equal oportunity offender.”’”

Seth MacFarlane is no stranger to the political scene, and is a keen supporter of Barack Obama. He has given financial support to the Democratic presidential nominee and the Democratic Party, and earlier this month spoke at an Obama rally in Ohio.

With just a couple of weeks to go before the presidential election, did Family Guy go too far? Let us know your opinions.

Familyguy doesnt seem like an equal opertunity offender in my opinion.Every single week they throw out some sort of republican jab.I just wish they would get away from all the political crap from time to time. The show is really getting preachy.Theyve made it to were u have to be a conservative hating liberal before u can enjoy the show.I was a big fan of the first three seasons but since it came back on the air its very hit and miss, heavy on the miss.

What’s funny is that everyone missed what I thought was a better, but less obvious stab at the Republican party in that same episode. In the scene where the Nazis are invading Poland, one of the characters (I think Stewie) asks “Why doesn’t America come in and help these people?” To which Brian looks at the camera and replies “Because Germany doesn’t have oil!?!?”

An a more serious note, it’s well known that Seth MacFarlane is a strong liberal. In his commencement address at Harvard, he pretty much belittled religion. I happen to share his point of view, so I was glad someone finally had the courage to say something about religion, but I can see how religious people can find his views offensive, and I probably would not go that far myself.

Its ironic how sensitive the republican party and republicans can be over this little joke (which by the way is hilarious!!!) when they hurl blatent hatred towards whomever they see fit. Too far, not even close.
