UK: Family Guy returns to UK television

Posted by Andy on Monday, September 18, 2006 in Europe

This can be seen as either good news or bad. Family Guy is finally returning to UK television with the BBC finally deciding its time to show the fourth season (note fourth season not fifth). The BBC have decided to move the show from its Saturday night slot on BBC Two to the grave yard slot on a Tuesday night on BBC Three. While the show is perhaps well suited to BBC Three’s audience it will annoy some who don’t have access to the channel. Episodes air as double-bills from 11.30pm Tuesday nights, starting tomorrow with North by North Quahog and Fast Times at Buddy Cianci High. It currently appears to be scheduled for just 5 weeks!

The BBC finally updated their Family Guy website to say that the fourth season starts tomorrow. Their promotion of the show is essentially non-existent, I suspect they bought the show and now don’t know what to do with it.

  6. arieanna smith (Tue 19 September 2006)

I think you should put it on a little earlier say 7 o'clock p.m. would be a better time for people like college kids who can't be like staying up until 11 o'clock p.m. or maybe you could put it on on fridays

This decision might not bold well for FG fans over in the UK.

im not too upset about the ridiculous timeslot, because if your a big enough fan of the show, then you'd surely have the dvd already.....boo to the bbc tho, for not having a clue what to do with such a quality show..!

WTF Are the bbc up tp. They get the greatest show ever, wait for everyone to get the dvd, then put it on a channel that not everyone has and on a time that does not suit everyone. How hard is it to use your brain.

  17. Richard (Mon 25 September 2006)

Its like they want the show to get bad ratings.

Well, I'm annoyed I only discovered S4 was on BBC3 last night, during episode 3..., but, firstly, buying the S4 DVD costs £16 or buying a freeview box to give you the extra channels costs £24, and secondly... ever heard of a VCR?
And 11pm too late for college students? hahahaha, I don't think I ever went to bed before 2am as a student. Not as if there's any reason to get up before midday, is there? (unless you like Jeremy Kyle or something).
Seriously - glad BBC finally started showing it. I'll ask for the DVD for Xmas though.

the BBC are a bunch of freakin morons, well at least it means they'll stop constant repeats of "2 pints..." for a few weeks

  20. Andy@PFG (Fri 29 September 2006)

Erin, it may have reduced the number of "2 Pints" repeats, but from next week they have cut back FG to one episode at around midnight and put "Ideal" on in place of the first episode. I suspect that the real problem is more to do with FG just not producing successful viewing figures in the UK on television. None of the channels that have shown FG have kept it in decent time slots for long before hiding it away. I think the TV networks are embarrassed that they bought the rights to the show.

    who cares?
i prefer watching them on the dvd so you can go back and watch the best bits again.

hear that? thats the sound of the bbc shoting themselves in the foot why show season 4 part 1 shows when 95% of family guy fans got the dvd when it came out 5 months ago whit till next month and buy the new dvd!

  23. JJayUK (Tue 03 October 2006)

"I suspect they bought the show and now don’t know what to do with it."

This is classic BBC. Remember when they first bought the Simpsons? It went out on Saturday at about 6PM. This is an audience that use to tune in for Noel's bloody Houseparty.

They don't just do it with stuff from the States, though. Just about every popular BBC sitcom in the last decade has started out on a grave yard slot. Royal Family (Tues 10pm), The Office (Sunday(!)10pm) etc etc

  24. Andy (Tue 03 October 2006)

JJayUK, 10pm is not a graveyard slot, lots of good sitcoms air at that time on the BBC and get decent viewing figures. Also, people seem to have forgotten the dreadful treatment of Family Guy on Channel 4 who cut the episodes to shreds so that they could show them at noon (SkyOne weren’t much better). Basically none of the channels that have owned the rights to the show have known what to do with it.

Seems to have moved to midnight wednesday morning now. Great.

  26. Looks_like_abe_lincon (Wed 11 October 2006)

The BBC like to work on a cult creating theory, weird science & Seinfielt used to get abused in the schedule it will create more of a cult sensation, that and they don
