Family Guy misses out again at the Emmys

Posted by Andy on Sunday, August 20, 2006 in Awards

For the second year in a row Family Guy has missed out on winning the Emmy award for “Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Less Than One Hour)”. This year’s prize goes to The Simpsons for the episode The Seemingly Neverending Story (their 9th win of the prize in the show’s 17 years).

Family Guy was nominated for the prize with the episode PTV earlier this year. Last year Family Guy lost the award to South Park.

Australia: Season 5 DVD out in November

Posted by Andy on Saturday, August 19, 2006 in Australasia

According to the Australian website TV on DVD Family Guy Season 5 will be released in Australia in November to coincide with the US/Canada release of Volume 4. Note that despite being called season 5 the episodes will in fact be the second half of the fourth season. The same confusion has been caused with the UK release. The seasons of Family Guy seem to be defined differently in the UK and Australia to the US for the DVD releases. We have no idea why. For an explanation of the season numbers see our FAQ section.

UK: Family Guy Season 5 cover art

Posted by Andy on Wednesday, August 16, 2006

Here’s the cover artwork for the fifth season DVD release in the UK availbale from the 23rd October. Please note that the episodes on this set will be the remainder of the fourth season, not those to yet be shown on Fox. The UK (and Australia) is releasing the episodes as shorter seasons, hence the difference in season numbering. The correct broadcast season numbers can be found in our episode guide. Broadcast seasons represent the episodes shown on Fox between September and August, ie season 4 are the episodes from the year 2005/06, whilst season 5 will be 2006/07 (starting in September this year).

We have no release dates yet for the US/Canada/Australia equivalent DVDs, we will let you know when we get them.

Bathing suits cause drownings...

Posted by Andy on Monday, August 07, 2006

So, the post’s title got your attention then. Good. Over the last few years there have been numerous articles about how Family Guy is a bad influence on kids, particularly from the PTC. Earlier this year the PTC complained at Fox for “targeting teens with Family Guy raunch”, but does watching TV shows with a significant amount of sexual content really drive teens to sex?

Well, an article posted today on the American Council on Science and Health website suggests that teens who ”...listen to sexual lyrics are just more inclined toward that form of entertainment, since it relates more to their personal experience.” Essentially, those who are already sexually active will be interested in watching shows that reflect this.

“Next time you see an article or study that purports to establish causation, first ask yourself whether it might just be an obvious association—and whether the writers might be advancing some other agenda by suggesting a causal connection. Otherwise, they’ll have you believing that bathing suits cause drownings, since 98% of drowning victims were wearing them at the time.”

An interesting opinion that I thought considering the amount of attacks Family Guy has had to put up with recently was worth reporting here.

UK: Family Guy Series 5 DVD

Posted by Andy on Wednesday, July 26, 2006

We get loads of e-mails asking us why the last DVD set in the UK was called the complete fourth season yet only contained 13 episodes, and when will the next lot of episodes be released.

Well, the explanation for the last set being referred to as the complete fourth season is a bit of a mystery. We believe it is due to the fact that the previous three UK releases were referred to as season box-sets, whilst in the US those episodes were sold as two volumes sometime after the UK releases. The last box-set was a global release, the same set being sold internationally, but the naming conventions in the different countries were kept. UK (and similarly Australian) fans do not need to worry, we have the same number of episodes released on DVD, and the remainder of the episodes will appear on DVD. Which brings me to the next point of this post…

Play.com has put up a pre-release page for the next DVD set, Family Guy: Series 5. They are forecasting a 23rd October 2006 release date. I haven’t been able to see this confirmed elsewhere, so it is likely to be subject to change. We will keep you posted, and hopefully will have some more concrete news soon.

Amazon.co.uk are also listing the fifth season DVD for a 23rd October release date.

07/28/06: just to point out, we believe that this DVD is the remainder of the fourth season, not the fifth season. The online stores are calling it ‘Series 5’ hence that is why we have reported it as such. The details are still sketchy as we have yet to see an official press release from Fox Home Entertainment. Please do not e-mail us asking about this as we have told you all we know here.

08/04/06: Sendit.com is listing the episodes that will feature on the Series 5 set as: Peter’s Got Woods; Perfect Castaway; Jungle Love; PTV; Brian Goes Back to College; The Courtship of Stewie’s Father; Fat Guy Strangler; The Father, The Son, and The Holy Fonz; Brian Sings & Swings; Patriot Games; I Take Thee Quagmire; Sibling Rivalry; Deep Throats; Peterotica; You May Now Kiss The…Uh…Guy Who Receives; Petergeist and Untitled Griffin Family History. Yes we are aware that these are season 4 not 5, but this is how they are marketed in the UK (if you want to complain contact Fox Home Entertainment).

Season 5 spoilers at Comic-Con 2006 - Update

Posted by Andy on Sunday, July 23, 2006 in Spoilers

Yesterday I posted about a number of season 5 spoilers that were revealed at the Comic-Con 2006 on Friday. Well, thanks to Comic Book Resources I can give you even more from the event, look away now if you don’t want to know:-

  • There will be a road show; Road to Rupert. Rupert gets sold at garage sale. A certain Gene Kelly scene will feature Stewie’s head in place of the famed mouse.
  • January boasts the episode: Barely Legal, in which Meg has no date for a dance. Brian goes with, gets lit, and then makes out with Meg at the dance. Meg remarks that she never knew how flat and wide Brian’s tongue was.

  • Characters from Star Wars will make an appearance.
  • A fall episode entitled “Prick up your ears,” revolves around a conservative Christian who comes to James Woods High. After all the condoms are taken out of the school, the kids go wild and start fornicating via the ear.
  • Peter finds out he’s actually a Mexican immigrant. “It’s just awful.”
  • There will be new characters.
  • Finally, the 100th episode is called “Stewie Kills Lois” and is a two-parter including a Family Guy-American Dad cross-over with Stewie finding himself at the CIA and meeting some American Dad characters.

In the questions and answers session at the convention the FG production team were asked whether the Evil Monkey and Greased Up Deaf Guy would reappear, to which they answered, “Yes on the Monkey, and ‘Stewie might try to catch the Greased Up Deaf Guy a la Coyote and Roadrunner.’”

    More spoilers as they come…

Season 5 starts on Fox on September 10, 2006.

Australia: Family Guy on Fox 8 tonight at 8.30

Posted by Andy on Sunday, July 23, 2006 in Australasia

From a Foxtel Press Release

“In the first such deals in Australia, Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution has awarded long-term future Australian television rights to Network Ten (TEN) and FOXTEL.”

“This is the first time a major US studio has apportioned first-run rights across both free-to-air and subscription television in Australia and marks a completely new approach to international program supply agreements.”

Okay, so what does it mean to you? Well, the new deal effects the showing of Family Guy and American Dad in Australia. It wasn’t meant to take affect until 2007, but as of tonight season 4 of Family Guy is showing at 8.30pm on Fox 8 (a foxtel/austar channel) followed by first season American Dad at 9pm. These are new weekly times for the two shows and marks an improvement on the poor scheduling previously done by Channel 7 (if you were in a State that got the shows).
