South Park beats Family Guy at the Emmys

Posted by Rob on Monday, September 19, 2005 in Awards

We reported in July that Family Guy had been nominated for an Emmy in the “Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Less Than One Hour)” category for the episode North by North Quahog. Unfortunately South Park beat them to it last night with the episode Best Friends Forever.

  3. fred (Mon 19 September 2005)

    booo... south parks sucks.
family guy should have taken it.

  4. Sib (Mon 19 September 2005)

I like South Park. But "North by North Quahog" is much better than "Best friends forever"

  5. LOL (Mon 19 September 2005)

South park isn't bad, but Family guy is 10000000% better

  6. Moldy (Mon 19 September 2005)

Also Family Guy is starting to go down. It's not as good as it used to be.

  7. qwerty (Mon 19 September 2005)

BFF was a hilarious episode. Can't really argue that either would have been the wrong choice.

  8. thagstools69 (Mon 19 September 2005)

family guy is the best animated series ever!!! but south park is also good. i like south park.

  9. Colonel Grammar (Mon 19 September 2005)

hey pac man, learn how to spell, and you obviously don't understand 1/10 of the jokes on Family Guy, you need a little kid show like South Park so the jokes don't fly over your head.

  10. Maso (Mon 19 September 2005)

I love both of the shows, so either one winning doesn't bother me either.

  11. Quagmire (Mon 19 September 2005)

You both dont know what your tlaking about... yeah south park is funny but family guy is the best frekin show on earth! gigity gigity!

  12. roxer (Mon 19 September 2005)

family guy will get one eventually

  13. shawnpaul (Tue 20 September 2005)

Moldy, you are CRAZY. Family Guy isn't going anywhere. It's like Full House on PCP; and we all know how long that show was on. Family Guy is here to stay because of they topical and well planned.

Also, LOL, since percentage is based on 100 it’s not cute when people exaggerate percentages. Blah!

  14. stewjarv (Tue 20 September 2005)

are they nuts! south park has been running stale for years at least family guy came back with a bang! who could the bit with brain draging his ass over tom tuckers front room carpet pure classic stuff!

  15. Squidy (Tue 20 September 2005)

If the Family Guy team had submitted Breaking Out Is Hard To Do they would have won.

  16. Judge (Tue 20 September 2005)

The new Family Guy's aren't as good as the old ones. Seth needs to lighten up on some of the jokes. He way oversells some of them. As one example, the Stewie playing Marco Polo with Helen Keller. That didn't need to go on for 2 minutes. We get it. Also, Stop pigeon holing Quagmire. All of the sudden with the new episodes every other word he says is Gigity. Like he is a smurf or something. Watch the old episodes and you'll see that Glen could actually talk. And knock off trying to make bit characters into recurring roles. Greased up Deaf Guy, Evil Monkey, The creepy old man, Blackuweather guy. All of those were funny when put into context. Quit trying to have them show up in every episode. Make up some new ones Seth. Christ!

  17. Stevon (Tue 20 September 2005)

South park and family guy are not really comparable, southpark is humourously disgusting whilst family guy is fun and not so absurd! South park is aimed more at kids to encourage them to swear and be sods, whilst family guy is clever, aimed more at adults, and basically funnier. I can see why south park has a greater variety of viewers, but family guy should have definately won! Although North by North Quahog probably wasn't the best choice in the world, compared to some of the rest of the excellent fourth series they could have competed with! Bottom line family guy rules!!!!!

  18. Buchsbaumy (Tue 20 September 2005)

Family Guy on the way up again and South Park on the way down- I dont understand how ANYONE can say that SP beats FG. Also, for those who think Family Guy is starting to lose its touch, I beg to differ. Every week I found me and my boys in complete awe as Family Guy pushes the line even further. And for the guy who commented about how Seth should stop using old one scene characters, thats retarded. Look at what Simpsons have done with a whole town of characters. Its good to throw in repeat characters. The show is by far the funniest animated show on TV and if you asked 1000 people that , 8500 would agree. They got snubbed!

  19. tejan (Tue 20 September 2005)

both south park and family guy are up there, i really dont think that south park is actually a kiddy show just as family guy is not. there is more to south park than meets the eye of an adult, there is a super underlying message that is there. on a side note family guy is number 1 in my book or watever u call it

  20. tejan (Tue 20 September 2005)

A agree with Judge. Yes Seth is asking the audience what we want and doing the right thing by listening to us. The problem is once you see a random new character doing something so funny that you laugh for hours, it's hard to make it as funny when you see the character again. This is why I believe Seth needs to come up with new random characters that will make you lose a lung. The only reason why I got hooked to Family Guy is the original and outrageous episodes I saw from seasons 1-3. Not repeated characters.

  22. mike (Tue 20 September 2005)

at least it wasn't the current simpson season. The more see the of that the more I want to put it out of it's misery.

  23. Moldy (Tue 20 September 2005)

Exactly what i was saying Judge. The new Family Guy are not as great as the old ones. These I will watch once or twice and be done with them. They have become really repetitive.

  24. Adam Mcool (Tue 20 September 2005)

I dont care because that was one of my least favorite episodes of family guy and south park is a wicked show

  25. Moderate (Tue 20 September 2005)

South Park and Family Guy are great shows but both have different directions. Both shows have a beginning, middle, and end but how it flows through that concept is what separates the shows. South Park has it right where a problem is introduced, two ways of solving that issue is introduced, both are analyzed, and a solution is decided through a cheesy moment. Family Guy…starts the same but getting to the solution is quite hazy…things are fixed way too easily because the amount of jokes take up majority of the time. No “development” has taken placed…but I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. I enjoy both of these shows but I feel that South Park is more organized. Also, South Park has the ability to be more current than Family Guy because of their Maya program. Their ability to create a show within 5 days is amazing and makes the show much more interesting during their new seasons.

  26. Mr. Plow (Wed 21 September 2005)

I enjoy South Park and Family guy fairly evenly, I don't agree with the suggestion South Park is aimed more at children than Family Guy, but thats just my opinion, anyways I'm glad after 5 nominations South Park finally won one, and I'm sure Family Guy's emmy will be coming soon

  27. leerhye (Wed 21 September 2005)

family guy repeating itself....south park and the simpsons do it al the time its hard to stay original but i think family guys over the top humour is all it needs

  28. 5c (Wed 21 September 2005)

family guy is boring now, i thought the movie was crap and all the singing is $hit and not funny, i am starting to hate family guy.

  29. edward (Wed 21 September 2005)

i bielive that seth is pushing his caracters to new calamity, and it makes me giggle like a school girl. south park is a genius of a show, it puts so many real factors into the show that most dont see that involve the real world on a serious level. but family guy is just so freekin hilarious. im sad FG didnt win, but props to south park

  30. island_grl (Wed 21 September 2005)

Family Guy's new season is really disappointing me, thank god American Dad is right after to stop my upchuck reflexes.

  31. tejan (Wed 21 September 2005)

i think family guy is re-using the characters for the new comers in the family guy watching life style, i think that this whole season is to get themselves back into the family guy mode and when they start feeling comfortable, they will start introducing new characters. for the people who just got into family guy, this season is a good way to show them basically what family guy is all about by bringing back these new characters and yes it might be annoying for us veterans, but just give it time to settle and we will start seeing the true magic of seth. and i think that south parks formula is getting really boring now. they need to change it up a little but i guess that formula is waht is keeping them up.
    heres some SAT verbal question
    can anyone answer this?
    Simpsons:Futurama
    Family Guy: ????

  32. Dóri (Wed 21 September 2005)

Family Guy should have won this.... south park is getting old...

  33. Ryan (Wed 21 September 2005)

South Park totally deserved it. The new episodes of Family Guy have been terrible. There hasn't been a good episode since season three.

  34. Butters (Wed 21 September 2005)

Colonel Grammar, Family Guy is more of a kid's show than South Park. Family Guy is dumb humor and SP is smart humor. Both types of humor can be good, but Family Guy isn't funny anymore.

  35. James (Wed 21 September 2005)

I bet Simpsons were higher than Family Guy.

  36. Moldy (Wed 21 September 2005)

Well thats just it the humor is getting repetitive. I dont give a s*** about the mokey anymore, neither do i care about the greased up guy. Also the fact that meg has no life is sumtin that keeps bein repeated.

  37. Dan (Wed 21 September 2005)

It doesnt really matter to me. Family Guy and South Park are both my favorite shows and there both really funny

  38. Maso (Thu 22 September 2005)

Last night I was searching the TV listings and I almost crapped my pants when I saw South Park (unedited) on UPN! I looked at the rating and it was TV-14 (one of the episodes form season 1). It hit my like a brick wall. The only reason why South Park is still very popular is because every year, Matt and Trey push the television limits more and more. Don't get me wrong, Seth loves to push Fox's buttons, but I think he can push them even farther. South Park AND Family Guy have proven that with a disclaimer, you can do (and say) whatever you want on television. Screw the censors! IMO, It’s about how much fun you can have making your own show, and sharing it with millions of fans. Not the money.

  39. FGfan (Thu 22 September 2005)

South Park is great, it deserved the award and is really smart. As for the people who say Family needs to stop using one hit characters, you're crazy. Using these as recurring characters, if used sparingly, will get a laigh and bring back familiarity for the old fans. I think it is more for old fans than new ones that will laugh and say, "I remember that guy." The monkey hasnt even been used much in the new ones, as he was used very frequently in the first 3 seasons.

  40. Silly Republican (Fri 23 September 2005)

Both shows can be taken on kids' humor and adults' humor levels. Both play on slapstick as well as verbal slapstick and, of course, playing on present and past pop-culture references. Both shows are insensitive in their own right though South Park has more structure (two story-line with cohesive beginning, middle and end). Family guy is more sporadic and doesn't come up with a 'moral at the end' or societal satire/message, which I think is a positive of South Park. If I compare 'Don't Make Me Over' to South Park's 'South Park is Gay', there's a big difference. South Park has a big head up in originality and production value in this one. We know Cartman's a jackass and we know Stewie's a talking baby. If Family Guy wants to do what South Park did in its later seasons (which would be smart, considering Family Guy was cancelled), it would leave the obvious and repetitive slapstick and elementary comedy to a smaller portion and start leveling up a bit. South Park is a better show for it, and Family Guy has plenty of seasons to adapt its show to a more mature comedy.

  41. hellnation (Fri 23 September 2005)

family guy is much better than sp!family guy is for kids????are you stupid or somthing?SP are ok but family guy is best.sp is not insain !snuff is insaine.

  42. Greg (Sat 24 September 2005)

Where I live, i don't get to see new epsiodes of south park but i have to say that south park is sortof a better show. even tho family guy is my favorite show ever i have to agree wit the emmys because south park is more of a show that makes fun of an issue but will make a very good point of it. SP is more of a smarter show then family guy which uses farts and fart jokes and jokes about sex a lot but it still makes my laff my ass off. I have to say South Park won the emmy fair and square or as cartman would say "Sqware"

  43. Peter (Sat 24 September 2005)

This is one of the most god damn stupid arguments I have ever seen.

  44. Beamer (Mon 26 September 2005)

Maso - the TV-14 episodes of South Park currently in syndication ARE edited. Not as heavily as you'd think, but there are changes made (eg. "god damnit" is now changed to just "damnit").

Anyway, I think South Park deserved it. Best Friends Forever was a very topical, intelligent and funny episode. People who say that South Park just encourages children to swear obviously don't GET the show - it's not encouraging them to do it, it's a satire on the fact that they ALREADY do it. It's supposed to be a look at modern society with a warped, exaggurated view. That's what makes it so great.

Family Guy, on the other hand, is more-or-less a collection of different jokes compiled into an episode, loosely tied together with a storyline. I'm not complaining about this - I love both shows, but like Silly Republican said, they're very different, despite their similarities in the "envelope pushing" department.

Either way, I think South Park deserved it. North by North Quahog is a very overrated episode (though I think it might've been the only one they could've submitted - there's a cut-off date for this). So, congratulations South Park for winning, and kudos to Family Guy for its nomination.

  45. edward (Wed 05 October 2005)

i love how most of you here put the 'veteran' label on yourselves and hate new epidsodes like youir the punk kid at your school that wont like the new CD becuse of course roots are best and if you didnt come in at the start you blow and everything sucks.... yeah whateva. lets all just simmer down

  46. craig (Fri 21 October 2005)

south park is all over the map. The last funny episode i saw was the "you go served" episode after that it just started getting wierd and preachy. souht park has always been preachy, but it comes in waves. Sometimes they hit paydirt liek with the passion of the jew episode, but usually they miss the mark liek the episode where everyone says shit or the one where the kids see osama bin laden....

family guy has really lost something this time around. these new episodes just don't have the edge or humor of the original ones. i know that is the type of thing people will always say regardless of whether its true, but in family guys case it got alot support to get back on the air and the criticism isn't a case of people looking fondly back on the older episodes . its a case of the new shows just not being up to par. in my opinion neither show should have gotte nthe enmy. they are both good shows that recently just haven't been cutting it lately.

  47. STEPH (Fri 11 November 2005)

the family guy movie wasnt as great as thouht it would be but family guy still rocks

  48. Rachel (Wed 22 February 2006)

South park is the best show ever its so funny family show is a shit show

  49. Rachel (Wed 22 February 2006)

i dont mind The Simpsons are funny sometimes

  50. jessica (Wed 08 March 2006)

i don't like family guy nomore it is so stupid and boring i think it for kids ages 13 and up yep family guy try to be all that but it really sucks. southpark is very very very awsome and funny than family guy because southpark won like 12 award (very cool) and family guy won like NONE, anyway southpark is awsome and the best tv show in the world

  51. Stewmyster (Thu 16 March 2006)

Family Guy is "untouchable" what show can take the line Ooorite and the fames line "Are you are you going to listen to me what I wanted to tell you is that I respect you". It's new school that became the classics after one season.

  52. stewie (Tue 04 April 2006)

family guy may not be as "edgy" as southpark but at least it's funny. southpark is passable but i quit laughing at it a long tim e ago. if it wasn't on before the daily show, it wouldn't be nearly as interesting.

  53. winopride (Thu 06 April 2006)

Wonder Showzen contains just as many socially relevent messages as South Park, and it blows Family Guy or any other show out of the water as far as dark-twisted-random humor. Why are we still even talking about these stale shows?

  54. you all are retarded (Thu 06 April 2006)

south park and family guy are not even comparable..south park is a show that shows younger children interacting with up to date topics in a "america..you are all fuckin insane" sort of appraoch. whereas family guy IS a funny show, each character gives off a distinction of new england life which is hilarious, and it isnt a bunch of jokes all tied into one episode..and the new south park episode dissing family guy is total bullshit

    -peace

  55. Crit (Fri 07 April 2006)

South Park is so much better. Peter and Chris are terrible characters. Peter was funny at the beginning, but once they used the same interchangable joke for him in every episode it sucked. Fred, good argument. South Park sucks. South Park is relevant, Family Guy is completely random and stupid. They think up retarded jokes and put them into episodes that have nothing to do with the content of the joke. Suck my balls Seth Macfarlane.

  56. Hefa (Fri 07 April 2006)

Southpark bases its humour about actual modern day events and things that happen in the real world, that’s what makes it so great, it is abusing free speech on the highest level and it is absolutely hilarious, the way it picks on basically everything is so god damn funny, matt stone and trey parker take REAL things like scientology and the debate for stem cell research, and they take the absolute piss out of them. On the other hand, family guy is just centred on unintelligent random humour that’s not even based around the storyline of the episode. Don’t get me wrong though, family guy is a great show, it by far beats the other animated comedies out there. But in the end southpark is the funniest and smartest cartoon out there; there is no question about it.

  57. Stewie's Loaded Diaper (Fri 07 April 2006)

South Park sucks and it has sucked for over 3 seasons now. Family Guy cleans the floor with them. The fact that South Park went so far as to make a parody of Family Guy goes to show that they are jealous and that they are totally out of original material.
